The Carolinas’ state parks pack natural wonders—lakes, cliffs, and trails galore. North and South Carolina’s best offer outdoor thrills for all. These parks top the list.

1. Hanging Rock State Park – Danbury, NC

Hanging Rock’s 7,000 acres feature a 250-foot namesake peak (1.5-mile hike) with Piedmont views. Waterfalls like Upper Cascade and a lake for kayaking ($6/hour) shine. Best for: rugged hikes.

2. Hunting Island State Park – Beaufort, SC

This 5,000-acre barrier island has 5 miles of beach and a 1859 lighthouse ($2 to climb). Marsh boardwalks spot gators; it’s $8 entry. Best for: coastal wild.

3. Crowders Mountain State Park – Kings Mountain, NC

Two peaks—Crowders (1,625 feet) and Pinnacle (1,705 feet)—offer 11 trails and Charlotte skyline views. Rock climbing’s big; entry’s free. Best for: summit payoffs.

4. Jones Lake State Park – Elizabethtown, NC

A rare Carolina Bay lake, Jones is ringed by cypress trees and white sand. Swim, paddle ($5/hour), or hike the 4-mile loop. It’s $6 entry. Best for: serene waters.

Why They’re Tops

Hanging Rock’s heights, Hunting’s coast, Crowders’ climbs, and Jones’ calm make them Carolina classics.

Visit Them

Hit Hanging Rock (45 minutes from Winston-Salem), Hunting (1 hour from Beaufort, SC), Crowders (30 minutes from Charlotte), and Jones (1 hour from Wilmington). Camp or day-trip—fees apply.
